Art Journaling for Healing: Unlocking Inner Wellness

This month marks two years since I lost the love of my life. This journal was created in response to losing my dear John in a tragic motorcycle accident.  The sudden loss was devastating.  This journal was instrumental for me as I worked through my grief.  It's something tangible that has bits and pieces of John. I began hand-stitching the book together and re-enforcing the cover.  Then I used an old pair of John's work jeans over the cover.

Ideas to use for healing with an art journal

Some parts of John I included were pieces of his writing, his last text's to me, old logbook pages from work, a speeding ticket, his motorcycle key, to a bandana he wore when he rode his bike.   As I worked through the journal I wanted to incorporate things about him that were "Him" or memories that I had.

It helps to sit and look through the journal now that is completed, to think about our lives together.  When I pick it up I feel there is something in his pocket, a small tube of Fixodent; he used to carry with him when we went to dinner.   Then in his back pocket is his motorcycle plate.  Oh, how we loved to ride together!   It helps to reflect upon our memories together and feel his presence.  And someday, when I am gone, it will be a treasure our daughter will have of us and for our grandchildren.

This is only one way to use an art journal.  This one I'm sure will always be my most treasured one for obvious reasons.  Art journals can be so many things from idea starting points to a trip you took (or are on). What will your treasured art journal be?
